The History of Fisherman’s Village

Long before Koh Samui became one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, Fisherman’s Village in Bophut was a small coastal community built around fishing and trading. The area was closely connected to the sea, with local fishermen using the beach and nearby waters for their daily work. Bophut is regarded as one of the island’s historic fishing settlements and an important docking area for fishermen in the past.

The history of Bophut is also closely connected with Chinese immigrants, particularly people from Hainan, who settled on Koh Samui during the 19th century. They became involved in fishing, trading and other businesses, helping Bophut develop into both a fishing settlement and a small coastal trading community. Their cultural influence can still be seen in the traditional buildings and atmosphere of the area today.

One of the most important reminders of this history is the row of old wooden shophouses along the waterfront. Many of these buildings are more than a century old. In the past, they served as family homes and small businesses, with people living close to their shops and the sea. Today, many of the old buildings have been carefully restored and transformed into restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques and small shops, while retaining much of their original character.

As tourism gradually developed on Koh Samui, the traditional fishing economy of Bophut changed. Many families moved away from fishing and began working in tourism and other businesses, while the historic buildings remained an important part of the village’s identity. This combination of old architecture, local history and modern businesses is what gives Fisherman’s Village its distinctive character today.

For visitors, walking through Fisherman’s Village is therefore more than simply visiting a restaurant and shopping area. The old wooden houses and narrow streets offer a glimpse into a time when Bophut was a working fishing and trading community. Although the area has changed considerably, its historic atmosphere continues to connect modern visitors with an important part of Koh Samui’s past.

Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui – Bophut Beach and Friday Night Market

Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is one of the most charming areas of Koh Samui. Located along Bophut Beach on the northern coast of the island, the area is famous for its old wooden shophouses, beachfront restaurants, cafés, bars, small shops and relaxed atmosphere. The village developed from an old fishing and trading community, and many of the traditional buildings have been preserved and adapted into restaurants, boutiques and other businesses, giving the area a distinctive character.

During the day, Fisherman’s Village is a pleasant place to walk along the narrow beachfront road, explore the old buildings and enjoy a meal or drink overlooking the sea. Visitors can find a wide variety of Thai and international restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops and beachfront bars. The area is also home to popular evening entertainment, including restaurants and beach bars where visitors can relax while enjoying the atmosphere of Bophut Beach.

Fisherman’s Village Koh Samui – Bophut Beach and Friday Night Market

One of the biggest attractions is the Fisherman’s Village Walking Street, also known as the Bophut Friday Night Market. Every Friday evening, the main street is closed to traffic and transformed into a lively walking street filled with food stalls, souvenirs, clothing, handicrafts and live entertainment. Visitors can try popular Thai street foods such as grilled seafood, skewers, Pad Thai, fresh fruit, coconut desserts and mango sticky rice while walking through the historic village.

The main Friday Night Market currently runs from approximately 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM every Friday, although individual stalls may open or close at slightly different times. The market is free to enter. It can become quite busy after sunset, so arriving around 5:00–6:00 PM is a good option for visitors who would like to explore more comfortably before the largest crowds arrive.
